Category III PPE are those that protect against serious risks to health and safety. These include fall-protection devices and equipment used to secure workers during work at height. Spider Linee Vita, specialized in fall-arrest safety, offers a wide range of high-quality personal protective equipment. In this article we explore what Category III PPE are, the related obligations, the applicable regulations, and the inspections required.
Among the topics covered you will find:
Spider Linee Vita is a company that has specialized in safety for years: for many years it has contributed to the design, manufacture, installation, and maintenance of fall-arrest devices. Thanks to the experience gained in the sector, we decided to produce and sell high-quality PPE, offering a wide range of solutions suitable for every field. Below you will discover the main categories of Category III fall-arrest PPE and what they are.
We specialize in the following product categories:
Removable fall-arrest systems are safety solutions required in situations where no fixed anchorage point is available. There are different types of removable fall-arrest systems, each specifically designed and engineered for different working conditions. The main ones include:
Spider has developed an innovative system called SUN200, specifically designed for installers of awnings, windows and doors, industrial doors, and air-conditioning systems.
The harness is a fundamental fall-arrest device for work at height. This PPE allows the worker to be connected to the safety line, protecting them from potential falls caused by slipping or loss of balance at height.
Spider harnesses are characterized by an advanced ergonomic design: they allow users to work in complete comfort while ensuring maximum lightness and freedom of movement.
To ensure the correct use of harnesses, high-quality lanyards are required. Lanyards and energy absorbers therefore represent a fundamental component of Category III PPE necessary for working at height. These safety devices are positioned “in between” the worker at height and the anchorage point: lanyards therefore play a crucial role in protecting the worker.
Higher-end lanyards are equipped with integrated energy absorbers within the rope: these devices absorb the energy generated during a fall, providing greater protection for the worker at height.
Self-retracting devices, also known as fall-arrest systems with self-retracting lifelines, are fall-protection PPE designed and used to stop a fall rather than prevent it. They consist of three main components:
Spider fall-protection devices are designed to ensure the highest standards of comfort and freedom of movement for operators.
Connectors are aluminium hooks used by professionals working at height to anchor themselves to other systems such as lifelines or other anchorage devices.
There are carabiners available in various types and sizes. Thanks to years of experience in designing lifeline systems, Spider understands the needs of operators working at height and therefore develops the best swivel connectors to ensure maximum safety and comfort.
When fixed lifelines are not available, temporary lifelines can be used. This type of system consists of two dedicated hooks designed to anchor the lifeline and make it operational.
All safety devices classified as Category III fall-arrest PPE are regulated by a reference standard: Legislative Decree No. 81 of 9 April 2008.
According to the decree, appropriate safety devices must be selected following a careful risk assessment; however, there are no PPE items that are mandatory by default. This assessment is usually the responsibility of the employer or the company’s safety manager: only in this way is it possible to identify the most suitable equipment to carry out work in complete safety.
There is no single rule that defines how to use Category III fall-arrest PPE, as these devices vary widely in type. However, there are some golden rules that should always be kept in mind:
As previously mentioned, personal protective equipment must only be used when a risk has been identified that cannot be eliminated. The same applies to Category III PPE: their use is therefore mandatory when they are essential to address a specific risk.
Personal protective equipment must not only ensure worker safety, but also maintain the required standards for proper use over time. For this reason, current regulations state that fall-arrest devices must undergo at least an annual inspection in order to properly safeguard the health and life of workers.
